Amy Begg-Marino

My artwork is diverged into two categories: observation and imagination.  Most artists would say that they use both at all times.  I would agree, but expand upon that to say that one usually dominates depending on what medium I am working with.  My photography is predominantly observation.  I search for the perfect angle and wait for the perfect light to hit it.  And my illustration is mainly imagination, with a few sources of reference material.  I enjoy bouncing back and forth between observation and imagination, and I believe it keeps my creative mind more alert.

I'm a photographer and teacher by trade, but about a year ago I began dreaming of little monsters.  My head was just exploding with them.  They are filled with mischief and a sense of innocent wonder.  In some ways they remind me of my students, and of my own childhood.  They are my babies, and they are always growing.  Not really growing up, but evolving into different mediums.  They make me believe in the possibilities of a fantastical world.  My wish is they they bring a smile, or even better...a smirk, to every viewers face.  They are my imagination incarnate, and I hope they bring you as much joy as they have brought me.

Our Monster Story

We are here to make you laugh, explore the world, make new friends, and cause a little mischief.  Basically we do whatever pops into our heads.  We don't generally think things through.  Sometimes this causes a few problems, and we're kinda sorry about that.  But we just can't help ourselves, this world is an awesome place!  Sometimes we like to be alone, while other times we travel in packs.  You never know where we might turn up.  The other day we were at the Baltimore Aquarium.  The jellyfish were really cool.  Maybe we'll come visit your neighborhood next!

By the way, we don't actually have a name.  There's a lot of us, and Amy is slowly getting around to naming us individually.  However, she has no idea what to call us as a species.  Monster is a pretty generic word, and we think we're pretty unique.  We would love your help if you're good at naming things.  If you think of a great name for us, please send an email to Amy.

Thanks!
